We were commissioned by the Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership to work with Watford YMCA to produce a series of 2D artworks for Watford Junction Station’s platform walkway.
We proposed a series of creative workshops with the YMCA residents following a call out via posters displayed and distributed around the YMCA building. These ran for over a month every Friday, and took the form of photography walks, museum visits, collage workshops, live drawing on the train, and water colour and texture studies. The group decided on some favourite elements of their work produced over the month to develop into poster designs for the platform. These were then digitally scanned and designed up into the final posters, which were unveiled by the Mayoress of Watford, local councillors and station staff.
– Initial consultation meeting with partners and participants
– 1 day of site research
– 5 creative workshops with YMCA residents
– Blog, newspaper PDF and hard copy and 5 x posters designed and printed
– Unveiling event on Watford Junction Platform with Mayoress of Watford and local councillors
Project A-B was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in ‘recognition of outstanding achievement’ in the Community Art Schemes (Renewable and Smaller) category at The ACoRP (Association of Community Rail Partnerships) Community Rail Awards and Gala Dinner on Oct 2nd 2014.
“We were delighted with Eleanor’s innovative approach to this project which was energetic and inspiring from start to finish. Eleanor really engaged the residents to take a wider perspective and break the barriers and fears of producing the artworks. The process, through the use of a blog and inspiring visits for photographing familiar objects/places in Watford, culminated in a series of inspiring views of Watford through a lens. The project was a great success and I would certainly recommend Eleanor to bring energy and a fresh perspective to any project that she is engaged in”
Janet Tyndale, Abbey Line Community Rail Officer for the Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership
